The mighty Job Description of Water Resources Assistant – Stormwater Job Circular
BASIC PURPOSEReporting to a Senior Utility Engineer or the Water Resources Manager in the Water Resources Division of Public Works, under close supervision, performs a variety of routine technical duties in support of education and outreach efforts that are led by Water Resources Specialist(s).Hours of work are generally between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., but also includes occasional evening and weekend work. Schedule is flexible and is limited to 16 hours per week.
Please note: Interviews are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, November 20.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThese duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Assist staff with developing educational activities for school groups, teachers, and public events.
- Teaches stormwater curriculum to K-12 students in North Thurston Public Schools.
- Facilitates community service projects for school and community groups.
- Coordinates and leads field trips for school and community groups.
- Educates the public about local water quality and conservation programs at events.
- Assists in the coordination of activities of several regional environmental education and outreach groups in which the City participates, including Stream Team of Thurston County, South Sound GREEN, Nisqually River Education Project, and the Thurston ECO Network.
- Attends surface and ground water quality sampling events with department staff to gain training and experience in understanding local water quality conditions.
- Distributes water conservation items.
- Develops and edits marketing materials under guidance of senior staff for web publishing (e.g. social media, city website, Stream Team website, etc.).
- Performs data entry.
QUALIFICATIONSREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A High School Diploma or Equivalent and two (2) years of experience or training in environmental monitoring.
OR
An Associate’s Degree or two years of college level work in Water Resources, Environmental Education, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, Statistics, other Physical or Earth Sciences, or a related field.
- May have a combination of experience, education, and training that would substitute for the above requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelors degree in Environmental Education, Water Resources, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, Statistics or other physical or earth science related field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSE(S):
- Must pass a thorough background investigation.
- Must be attentive to job safety considerations and follows all required safety policies, procedures and techniques.
- Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the City at time of hire OR must be able to provide own transportation to and from job, meetings, and related job sites.
- Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed as required by the immigration Reform and Control Act.
- Must pass a North Thurston School District Background check.
- Must be considering a profession related to some aspect of the City’s business objectives.
