The Principal Advisor Maritime Safety is accountable to the Manager, Marine Safety and Compliance for providing expert advice to senior management and external stakeholders regarding port operations, management of harbors, commercial and recreational boating, marine pollution response, waterways management and vessel standards. In addition, the Principal Advisor will ensure that the Department is across current national and international developments and issues in Maritime Safety and their potential implications to the Department’s policies and strategic plans.The role provides a significant contribution to the management of Memorandum of Understandings, Service Level Agreements, Port Operating Agreements, environmental issues and vessel standards which promotes the credibility and effectiveness of the Marine Services directorate.The role is also responsible for effectively developing and implementing high level operational advice on maritime and navigational safety and marine environmental issues in line with the State’s strategic plan for SA waters.About You
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated professional with demonstrated expertise in researching and analysing complex information to provide innovative, pragmatic solutions that align with strategic priorities. You need to demonstrate a proven ability to work independently, plan effectively, and manage competing demands while meeting critical deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills are essential, with experience leading stakeholder engagement and influencing negotiations to achieve successful outcomes. You will possess well-developed written and verbal communication skills, capable of delivering expert advice and comprehensive reports to senior leadership.Additionally, experience in leading change and risk management initiatives is required, along with the ability to cultivate collaborative working relationships and foster a positive workplace culture. The role also demands experience in delivering customer-focused, strategically aligned services and a proven ability to resolve complex, sensitive issues using sound professional judgment.Requirements
Master Unlimited seafarer’s certificate under the Navigation Act 2012 of the Commonwealth; or Qualification under the law of some other place recognised under the Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law or the Navigation Act 2012 of the Commonwealth as equivalent to such a certificate of competency or seafarer’s certificate as Master Unlimited.Special Conditions
Prior to employment with the Department the successful candidate will be required to provide:
- A National Police Check (NPC) which must be renewed every three years.
- A Department for Human Services (DHS) Working with Children Check (WWCC) which is required to be renewed every five years before expiry.
Some out of hours and weekend work, along with some intra/interstate travel requiring overnight stays, may be required.In the event of an emergency any staff member of the Marine Safety and Compliance Section may be required to assist in the response and recovery activities. This may potentially include long hours and challenging work conditions.Must be suitable to be appointed as an Authorised Officer under relevant Acts.Tenure of Vacancy
